Thankfully for Gavaskar, Kapil was easier to convince this time around. He realized that batsmen have the tendency to play out the fast bowlers in international cricket. And with quite a few matches being played on placid pitches, he needed to be accurate. To get his length right all the time, he had to have control over the movement of the ball. With this change in approach, he became more effective.

“Kapil is India’s greatest match-winner and he could do it with both bat and ball. And as we saw in the final of the 1983 World Cup, he could turn the game around with his fielding ability as well. He was awesome with the bat, but he did not fully utilize his talent. Instead, he chose to concentrate on spearheading a limited bowling attack,” Gavaskar says.
